CHANGING THE GAME

WHAT WE’RE LEARNING ABOUT THE BRAIN MAY CHANGE THE WAY WE LOOK AT SPORTS

At Axon Sports, we are currently developing products to train the athletic brain and accelerate the curve of expertise acquisition. Below are some visions of what these products might look like. We believe that the intersection of sports and neuroscience is going to change how athletes train and we plan to be at the forefront of this movement.

Pitch Recognition
A key aspect of expertise is the efficient processing and use of information. An athlete has an infinite number of things that they might pay attention to: opponents’ movements, crowd noise, and his/her emotions and internal thoughts, just to name a few. The best athletes–the ones who make the quickest and best decisions–focus only on the most relevant information. We are currently developing a pitch recognition application that will train baseball players to do just this.

The best hitters are so efficient in how they view and react to a pitchers’ movements that they can tell what type of pitch is coming without even seeing the release of the ball. Everything in the pitcher’s movement signature and body position gives away the pitch type. They can tell where the ball is headed after seeing just a few feet of flight. The pitch recognition programs currently under development are research-supported applications that will help train hitters to see the game like an expert.

High-Speed Decision Making
Football players are faced with a multitude of decisions on every play. Their own team’s formation, the opponent’s formation, personnel groups, matchups, tendencies, the game situation at hand, and more. On the field, players are forced to take each of these into account and make split-second decisions that decide the outcome of a play or game. We are currently developing high-speed decision making products for football players that will help slow the game down by training these important skills.
